NANS to Stage Mass Protest Over Prolonged Closure of Public Primary Schools in FCT

UGAMA TV – Abuja | Monday, June 30, 2025

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans to stage a mass protest on Wednesday, July 2, over the continued closure of public primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This was disclosed in a protest notice signed by NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, and obtained by UGAMA TV on Monday.

According to the notice, students will gather by 7:00 am at the FCDA Secretariat, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, dressed in black attire to symbolise what NANS describes as the “death of basic education” in the nation’s capital.

The student body expressed outrage over the over two-month-long closure of public primary schools in the FCT, calling it an injustice to children, especially those from low-income backgrounds, who depend on public education.

“Despite multiple appeals, correspondences, and calls for constructive dialogue with the relevant authorities, no meaningful steps have been taken to resolve the impasse or reopen the affected schools,” Oladoja said.

He accused the FCT Administration under Minister Nyesom Wike of negligence and disregard for the educational rights of Nigerian children.

NANS had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the FCT Administration, demanding the immediate reopening of the affected schools. With no resolution reached, the association says it is now moving to the streets to press home its demands.

“This protest is not just about education—it is a fight for justice, equality, and the soul of Nigeria’s future,” Oladoja stated.

The student leadership has directed all NANS structures across the FCT and neighbouring states, including Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna, to begin full mobilisation of students, civil society groups, and education rights activists.

Leaderships from NANS Zones A and C have also been instructed to coordinate and ensure widespread participation in the mass action.

As of press time, there has been no official response from the FCT Administration regarding the planned protest or the reopening of the schools.
