A motorist, Isiaka Afolabi, has been arrested and arraigned before the Badagry Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over the alleged manslaughter of a 14-year-old boy in a fatal road incident.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, the incident took place on April 22 around 3:30 p.m. in the Badagry area of Lagos State. Afolabi, said to be driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with registration number AGL 122 BJ, allegedly drove recklessly and struck the teenager, who died on the spot.
Inspector Ekpo told the court that the defendant’s actions displayed a clear disregard for public safety, as he operated the vehicle in a dangerous manner on a public highway.
The offence contravenes Sections 27 and 19 of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 124, Laws of Lagos State.
Afolabi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Presiding over the case, Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦1 million, with two sureties in the same amount. The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide proof of gainful employment.
The case has been adjourned until July 9 for further hearing.
