The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspected notorious robbers who had been terrorising residents and commuters around the Iyana-Iba Under Bridge and Ajegunle areas of the state.
One of the suspects was arrested at Iyana-Iba by operatives of the Ojo Police Division led by CSP Omolola Opeifa, while the second suspect was apprehended in Ajegunle by officers of the Command’s Tactical Squad.
Confirming the arrests in a statement, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed that ATM cards and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.
According to her, the Command recorded the arrests during separate intelligence-led operations. In Ajegunle, credible intelligence revealed that suspected hoodlums were operating with commercial motorcycles while armed with dangerous weapons to rob unsuspecting members of the public.
Acting on the information, operatives of the Command Tactical Team, Thunder Blast, were deployed to the area, leading to the arrest of one Waheed Orelope, 27. A locally made pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from him during preliminary investigations.
Similarly, following intelligence reports that hoodlums had taken over the Iyana-Iba Under Bridge in Ojo, posing a threat to commuters and residents, the Surveillance Team of the Ojo Division was deployed to the area. The operation resulted in the arrest of one Wasiu Shonibare, 29, from whom a locally made pistol was recovered.
The suspects are currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement and identify other members of the gang. Further developments will be communicated as investigations progress.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to proactive policing and the protection of lives and property across the state. He also urged members of the public to continue to support the police with timely and credible information.
