Nollywood director and actor Kunle Afolayan has addressed the recent misunderstanding with fellow actress Funke Akindele, emphasizing that he holds no personal grudge against her.
The tension arose after Afolayan, speaking at the Lagos Business of Film Summit, criticised the growing trend where filmmakers are expected to dance, create skits, and maintain constant social media activity to promote their movies. “It is draining. I want to make a film if you guarantee me that I don’t have to dance to sell that film,” he said, highlighting his frustration with the focus on viral marketing and box office numbers.
Funke Akindele responded on Instagram, advising Afolayan to explore alternative promotion strategies, and clarifying that she was not obstructing his career. “The opportunities are endless. I’m focused on mine, and I have faith in God’s plan for me,” she wrote.
Afolayan later revealed in an interview with Arise TV that Akindele had called him, expressing her displeasure over being mentioned in interviews. “She was yelling,” he admitted, quoting her as saying, “Mr Afolayan, I know you don’t like me. But don’t mention my name in your interviews.”
Despite the heated call, Afolayan insisted there is no animosity. He further clarified that he had even recommended Akindele’s model to aspiring filmmakers during a masterclass in Kaduna, saying, “If you want to adopt a model that I think will work for you now, follow Funke Akindele’s model.”
Afolayan’s comments underline his respect for Akindele’s career while reaffirming his personal approach to filmmaking and promotion.
