A Sharia Court in Kano has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Sabiu Abdullahi, to 50 strokes of the cane for stealing five pieces of roofing sheets.

 

The ruling was delivered on Friday, August 1, after Abdullahi, a resident of Mariri Quarters in Kano, pleaded guilty to charges of trespass and theft, offences punishable under Sections 134 and 287 of the Kano State Penal Code Law.

 

According to the prosecution counsel, Zahradeen Abubakar, the case was reported by one Anas Yakubu of Tamburawa Quarters, who told police that the theft occurred in his absence on July 21.

 

Abubakar informed the court that the defendant had unlawfully entered the complainant’s premises and made away with the roofing materials.

 

Delivering judgment, Judge Malam Umar Lawal ordered that Abdullahi receive 50 lashes as punishment for the offence.
