The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended the screening of 22 Hausa-language films for allegedly violating its regulatory guidelines.
In a statement issued by the Board’s Information Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the move was described as part of efforts to enforce strict compliance with industry regulations and to maintain professionalism within Kannywood—the Hausa film industry.
According to the statement, the suspension order was issued on Sunday by the Board’s Executive Secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, following a management meeting and consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The affected films include Labarin, Dadin Kowa, Manyan Mata, Garwashi, Jamilun Jidda, Gidan Sarauta, Dakin Amarya, Mashahuri, Wasiyya, Tawakkaltu, Mijina, Wani Zamani, Mallaka, Kudin Ruwa, Boka Ko Malam, Wayasan Gobe, Rana Dubu, Fatake, Gwarwashi, Jamilun Jiddan, Shahadar Nabila, Tabarma, Kishiyata, and Rigar Aro.
The board instructed all producers and rights holders of the suspended films to immediately halt their airing or online streaming and to submit the content for censorship review. The deadline for submission is from Monday, 19th May to Sunday, 25th May 2025. Failure to comply, the board warned, would attract legal sanctions.
The statement reiterated the Board’s legal authority to review and approve all films intended for production, marketing, broadcasting, or streaming—both within and outside Kano State.
