The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Bright Ngene of the Labour Party (LP) as the winner of the re-run election for the Enugu South 1 State Constituency.
The election, which was ordered by the Appeal Court, had faced multiple disruptions caused by violence and thuggery. However, INEC confirmed on Tuesday that the process has been successfully concluded.
In a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission noted that “after previous disruptions of the elections in the two states by violence and thuggery, the elections have now been concluded. Declaration and return were made by the Returning Officers.”
Ngene, however, is currently remanded at the Enugu prison by a court order, raising questions about how his incarceration may affect his new mandate.
