It’s unfair to owe Pelican players 14-month salaries – Ex-Falcons

Some ex-Super Falcons players have reacted to the  14 months salaries owed players of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Pelican Stars by the Cross River State Government.

The players on Wednesday blocked the gate to the office of Governor Ben Ayade in Calabar, in protest over their unpaid salaries.

Former Falcons star Stella Mbachu, an ex-Pelican player, said that it was unfair to owe the players for such number of months.

“Female players suffer a lot in Nigeria. Yes, we know that there are economic problems now and many state governments are striving hard to keep things in shape,” Mbachu said.

“But to owe the players this much is not good for the club, the players and the nation. I will support players to protest what’s their due.

“I once played for Pelicans, but during our time, nothing like this happened. These players have needs and they have families. How would they take care of themselves if they are being owed?”

Former goalkeeper of the national women’s team, Taiwo Ajobiewe-Asikogu, added, “I think the NFF should do something about this.

“These girls need their money. Is it that they want them to start prostituting? The government should please do something about their salaries.”
