IGP seeks improved information management on crimes

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali, has said there is the need for improvement of information management on police crime investigations.

The IGP, who said this on Wednesday during a three-day ‘Intensive Capacity Building Workshop for Police Public Relations Officers’ across all commands and other formations of the Nigeria Police Force, added that empowering police spokesmen with the requisite knowledge in analytical and strategic communication would broaden their responses to crime incidents for better public engagement.

The workshop tagged, ‘Crime Scene Management and Conclusive Criminal Investigations – The Role of Police Spokespersons,” was organised in partnership with the Nigeria–German Development Cooperation.

Alkali added, “This course seeks to equip the participants with skills necessary for effective descriptive, analytical and strategic communication touching on criminal investigations and procedure.

“This will enable them (PPROs) to acquire relevant skills to give appropriate responses to citizens and media enquiries into matters of forensic and evidential nature connected to ongoing criminal investigations.

“Participants of this course must be reminded that, to succeed as police image makers, they must be versatile and have deep theoretical and practical knowledge of all aspects of policing, covering administration, operations, investigations, forensics, amongst others.”
