“Igbo tradition is stopping young women from getting married” — lady cries out

A Nigerian lady has sparked conversation online after lamenting how some Igbo marriage traditions are, according to her, making it harder for young women to settle down.

In an emotional rant, the lady complained about the long list of financial demands placed on intending husbands by extended family members she barely knows. She questioned why people who have never supported her in any way are suddenly making heavy demands simply because she wants to get married.

According to her, these relatives—often referred to as umunna, umuada and other family groups—are insisting that all customary payments must be fully settled by her partner before the marriage can go ahead.

She said the pressure is overwhelming, especially as many of those making the demands have never contributed to her life, not even in the smallest ways.

The lady added that while traditions are important, the way some families weaponise them is discouraging marriages and placing unnecessary strain on couple.
