The Igbo Elders Forum on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest at the Abia State Government House, urging Governor Alex Otti to work with other South East governors to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Their demonstration comes ahead of Friday’s ruling on Kanu’s no-case submission at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Addressing journalists in Umuahia, the group’s spokesperson, Emeka Ezebuiro, expressed concern over Kanu’s deteriorating health and accused authorities of denying him access to adequate medical care.
“We came to register our annoyance and our feelings. Our son is still in detention and is very sick yet they are denying him access to medical care. Why are they negotiating with armed robbers and bandits but still holding him?” Ezebuiro said.
The group vowed to take their appeal to other South East governors, stressing that a united front from the region’s political leaders could help secure Kanu’s freedom.
Similarly, the Igbo Think Tank North America, in a demand letter to Igbo governors and political leaders, alleged a “silent genocide” against Igbo youths. Its president, Dunkwu Agbambu, called on leaders to protect Igbo communities from killings, invasion, and destruction.
UGAMA TV reports that the Federal High Court initially scheduled the ruling for October but has now brought it forward to Friday, September 26.
