IBBUL Student Killed by Suspected Robbers, Students Protest as Emir Imposes Curfew in Lapai

Tragedy struck the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State, as suspected armed robbers killed Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level student of Science Education (Chemistry), in the early hours of Monday, June 23, 2025.

Jafar was attacked at his off-campus residence, Nda Kitabu Lodge, located opposite the university’s second gate. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants stormed the lodge around 2:30 a.m. and stabbed him in the neck. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was later confirmed dead.

The killing sparked outrage among students, who staged a protest demanding justice and better security. The demonstrators blocked the Agaie–Lapai Expressway, halting traffic and drawing the attention of law enforcement agencies. The protest lasted for over an hour.

During the protest, a journalist and founder of Lapai TV was allegedly assaulted by some agitated protesters while carrying out his duties.

As of the time of this report, authorities have not released an official statement on the incident. However, the university community is calling for urgent intervention to prevent further unrest.

In response to the tragedy, the Emir of Lapai, His Royal Highness Alhaji Umar Bago Tafida III, has cancelled the weekly Tuesday Market as a mark of respect for the deceased student and in solidarity with the grieving university community.

The Emir made the announcement during an emergency meeting with IBBUL management, student union leaders, and community stakeholders. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to Jafar’s family and the entire university.

To address rising security concerns and restore calm, the Emir also announced the imposition of a temporary curfew in Lapai. He issued a stern warning to anyone found collaborating with or harboring criminal elements within the community.
