House of Representatives panel to hold peace dialogue over Jos unrest today

The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Security has announced plans to convene a broad-based dialogue involving key stakeholders to address the security situation in Plateau State.

The move follows recent unrest in Jos, the state capital, where violence reportedly began with planned attacks by gunmen and escalated through reprisals.

According to the committee, the meeting is aimed at identifying the root causes of the crisis and developing sustainable solutions. In an invitation issued by the committee chairman, Wale Hammed, stakeholders from across sectors were called to participate.

“The House of Representatives Committee cordially invites critical stakeholders, including government representatives, former governors, traditional institutions, security agencies, civil society organisations, international partners, religious bodies, academia, researchers, public-spirited individuals, and the general public, to a one-day special dialogue and security conference,” the statement read.

“This important gathering aims to examine and address the root causes of the security challenges in Plateau State and beyond, while collaboratively developing practical and sustainable solutions.”

The event, themed “Restoring Stability and Unity: A Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Security in Plateau State and Beyond,” is expected to provide a platform for participants to share insights and propose strategies for long-term peace.

“This conference will provide a platform for inclusive dialogue, enabling participants to share insights, reflect on real-life experiences, and contribute to strategies that foster collaboration, strengthen unity, and promote lasting peace,” the statement added. “Let us come together to shape a secure and prosperous future for Plateau State.”

A communiqué outlining key outcomes and recommendations is expected to be issued at the end of the dialogue.
