Halt rising insecurity or resign, protesting Plateau women tell Buhari

Several women in Plateau State, on Monday, joined the protest against worsening insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region, with many of them calling on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to resign from his position.

The protesting women converged on the 18th Street in Jos with placards bearing different inscriptions such as, ‘Stop school abduction’, ‘Evil is evil, stop the injustice against women’, ‘Enough is enough’, ‘Free Leah Sharibu’ and ‘We’re tired of the killings’, among others

According to them, Buhari’s regime has failed to address the security problems in the North despite several promises.

Speaking with journalists, the leaders of the protesters lamented the continued stay of Leah Sharibu in insurgents’ enclave and called on Buhari not to allow her and many others still held by the insurgents to spend another Christmas in Boko Haram captivity.

The President, Leah Sharibu Foundation ,Dr Gloria Puldu, said, “The entire world needs to know that Nigeria is still very much insecure, especially the government of the United States of America that recently removed Nigeria from the list of countries of particular concern. What is the basis of removing it when insecurity is increasing in different parts of the country on a daily basis with human lives and properties being destroyed?”

Another protester, Rhoda Jahota, noted that for the past two weeks, women in the North-West and the North-East had been crying for protection from terrorists just like their counterparts from the North-Central had done for years without the government doing anything tangible to intervene in the situation.

She said, “We are here today to tell Mr President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, and the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Simon Lalong, that we are tired of insecurity in Nigeria

“For how long shall our husbands, women, children and the young ones continue to be killed mindlessly before the government realises that it has a responsibility to protect the people? Many of our women are dying, while others are in Boko Haram captivity. The people are tired of hearing that the government is on top of the security situation, while the reality on the ground has proved otherwise.

“Let the government of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari do something urgent to save the people from this unfortunate situation or resign and allow others to address the problem in the interest of all Nigerians.”
