In a decisive move toward grassroots empowerment and inclusive governance, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, on Tuesday extended a hand of fellowship to members of the Motorbike Riders Association in Awgu North, distributing free 5-liter petrol packages to each rider.
The event, held during a strategic engagement with the motorcycle transport community — popularly known as Okada riders — marked a significant show of solidarity and a practical step toward alleviating the impact of rising fuel costs on daily earners.
Opening the event with prayers was Hon. Egbo Solomon, Administrator of the Mbanabo North Development Centre, setting a tone of unity and purpose.
Addressing participants, Rt. Hon. Brown Moses Okorie, Deputy Leader of the Awgu Legislative Council and Councillor representing the zone, praised the Chairman for his inclusive leadership style and for recognizing the critical role of Okada riders in driving local commerce and connectivity.
In his keynote address, Hon. Okolo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for Governor Peter Mbah’s transformative agenda, describing the governor’s infrastructural strides as “a model for regional development.” He emphasized that the initiative was not merely a gift, but a symbol of his administration’s shared commitment to inclusive governance and grassroots development.
“This is our own way of saying thank you to our riders who serve as the heartbeat of local transport and economic movement,” Hon. Okolo said in an interview with UGAMATV. “We are also using this opportunity to reassure them that our government — in line with Governor Mbah’s vision — remains people-centered and responsive to the needs of every resident.”
Over 300 Okada riders received the free petrol support during the outreach, a gesture that was met with gratitude and applause from beneficiaries and community stakeholders.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Awgu Local Government leadership to build trust, drive inclusion, and elevate community voices in governance — reinforcing the commitment of Hon. Okolo’s administration to serve as a true government of the people.
