London, July 13, 2025, Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, has died in London at the age of 82. His death was confirmed by family sources and aides who revealed that the former leader passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.
Buhari, a retired major general and former military head of state from 1983 to 1985, later served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He was widely known for his stance against corruption and his efforts to restore security in the nation, although his administration was also marked by economic challenges and growing insecurity in later years.
The former president had been residing in the United Kingdom for routine medical care and private rest since leaving office in May 2023. He had maintained a low profile and rarely made public appearances.
Tributes have started pouring in from national and international leaders, expressing condolences to the Buhari family and the government of Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Buhari’s death as “the end of an era” and called him “a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.”
The Presidency is expected to announce official burial plans in accordance with Islamic rites and national honors.
Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, children, and grandchildren.
