A fire incident has occurred at Terminal One of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Providing an update, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed that emergency responders swiftly deployed a crane to assist rescue efforts at the Control Tower. All 14 individuals who were initially trapped in the facility were successfully evacuated without fatalities.
FAAN reported six casualties—three men and three women—all of whom are in stable condition. One of the affected persons was moved to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further medical assessment and is also said to be stable.
As a precautionary measure, the sixth floor of the impacted building has been fully cleared to facilitate ongoing emergency response and safety management efforts.
Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service suggest that the blaze started in the server room located on the first floor of Terminal One. While the fire in the departure hall has largely been contained, emergency teams continue to monitor the area to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the terminal. In line with safety procedures, the airspace was temporarily shut down.
Speaking at the scene, FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, disclosed that the incident disrupted some operations, leading to the diversion of three flights. However, she assured passengers that normal flight activities would resume shortly.
She added that established emergency protocols were promptly activated and investigations are ongoing. According to her, renovation activities were underway within the airport premises, and items were being moved in the affected area before the outbreak.
Airlines including British Airways, Lufthansa, and Emirates were diverted due to the disruption.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) stated that it is working to set up a temporary Control Tower to ensure the safe and swift restoration of full airport operations.
