The Federal Government has announced plans to disburse cash transfers to 2.2 million poor households across the country as part of its efforts to alleviate poverty.
The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, made this disclosure on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
According to him, beneficiaries have already been captured in the national social register, and payments will begin before the end of August.
“In the next few days to come, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households. The process is such that the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will harvest vulnerable Nigerians based on their lowest cadre in the national social register,” Sununu explained.
The minister further revealed that under the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme, the government has so far disbursed ₦419 billion to five million Nigerians.
“For those Nigerians, it is a rapid conditional cash transfer. So far, we have disbursed ₦419 billion to five million Nigerians. We have distributed 71 per cent in the northern part and 21 per cent in the southern part of the country,” he stated.
Sununu emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s broader intervention programmes targeted at reducing poverty and supporting the most vulnerable citizens.
