The Federal Government on Wednesday explained the cause of the national grid collapse that occurred at about 11:20 am on September 10, 2025.
According to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the incident was triggered by the tripping of a generation company (GenCo), which caused a significant load drop that cascaded to other GenCos, resulting in a widespread system disturbance.
In a statement, NISO said restoration of the grid commenced almost immediately, with power supply to parts of Abuja restored from the Shiroro power plant by 11:45 am. Substantial recovery has since been recorded across the country.
“A full investigation into the immediate and remote causes is underway. The report will determine the remedial and proactive actions needed to forestall future occurrences. We crave your indulgence to bear with us as restoration is still ongoing,” the agency said.
Checks by UGAMA TV confirmed that power has already been restored in parts of Abuja.
