The Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned a disturbing incident of domestic violence and child abuse in which a man allegedly set his family on fire in the Onicha Ngwa community, Obingwa Local Government Area.
The tragic event occurred in the early hours of Saturday, between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., when 40-year-old Mr. Udochi Amala reportedly set himself, his wife—Mrs. Amarachi Amala—and their three children ablaze over suspicions of infidelity. The family resided in Amapu Ihe village in Osisioma LGA.
Following the act, Udochi, who also sustained burns, attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended. One of his daughters died shortly after from severe burns. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Mrs. Amala and their two remaining children later died on Monday while receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Initial statements from Udochi indicate regret and emotional turmoil. “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life,” he allegedly said, admitting he never actually caught her with another man.
Confirming the incident, Abia State Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka stated, “Yes, the Police are aware. Investigation is ongoing.”
In a statement signed by FIDA Abia Chairperson Njideka Aniawonwa and Secretary Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, the organization expressed “shock, outrage, and deep concern over this horrific act, which is a gross violation of human rights and dignity.” FIDA called for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims, as well as greater protection and support for survivors of domestic abuse.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of women and children and urged the public to report all cases of domestic violence and support efforts to safeguard vulnerable individuals.
