Farewell to a Patriot: Gov Mbah Honours Senator Ezea, Praises His Enduring Legacy

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, on Friday joined dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers to pay last respects to the late Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Okey Ezea, describing him as a principled leader and true patriot whose legacy will endure.

The funeral Mass, held in Itchi in Igboeze South Local Government Area, drew mourners from across political, religious, and social divides, reflecting the broad respect the late lawmaker commanded during his lifetime.

Governor Mbah described Ezea’s passing as a profound loss not only to his immediate family and constituents but to Enugu State as a whole. He noted that the late senator distinguished himself early in his career at the Nigeria Customs Service before venturing into business and eventually politics, where he remained deeply committed to public service.

According to the governor, Ezea’s unwavering dedication to improving the welfare of his people defined his public life. He emphasized that the late senator demonstrated that the true measure of life lies not in its length but in the impact made, describing him as “unpretentious, resolute, and passionate about service.”

Offering condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the government and people of Enugu State, Mbah assured them they were not alone in their grief and prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul. He also commended the Church for its steadfast support to the family during the mourning period.

Delivering the homily, Catholic Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Godfrey Onah, extolled Ezea’s virtues, describing him as a courageous and selfless leader guided by conviction and a strong sense of responsibility to his people. He noted that even political opponents respected the late senator for his candour and integrity.

Bishop Onah also praised Governor Mbah for approving a state burial in honour of the deceased, describing the gesture as a mark of leadership maturity and respect for public service. He added that recognising leaders who served with integrity helps reinforce positive societal values and inspires future generations to prioritise service above personal gain.

The solemn ceremony underscored the lasting imprint Senator Ezea left on Enugu State and Nigeria’s political landscape, as tributes continued to highlight his dedication, courage, and commitment to the common good.
