Tragedy struck on Wednesday in Abuja as a family of three, a man, his wife, and their son, lost their lives after being chased by touts, popularly known as agberos, at the Mabushi Bridge.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims had just purchased a refrigerator and were on their way home in a Toyota Highlander when the touts began pursuing them.
The hoodlums reportedly forced their way into the vehicle and attempted to wrestle control of the steering wheel from the driver. In the ensuing struggle, the car rammed into a bridge pillar before plunging into a drainage channel.
“All the occupants died on the spot,” an eyewitness told Leadership, adding that the tragic scene drew tears from road users and passersby.
The incident sparked outrage, leading to a mob attack on the touts. One of them was beaten to death, while two others sustained severe injuries before being rescued by officers from the Mabushi Police Division, who arrived at the scene.
The bodies of the deceased family have since been deposited in a morgue.
As of the time of filing this report, the police are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
