A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced former senior government official, Mr. Baltasar Ebang Engonga, to eight years in prison for embezzlement.
Engonga, who previously headed the national financial investigation agency, was convicted by the Bioko Provincial Tribunal of diverting public funds meant for official travel expenses for personal use. He was also slammed with a fine of $220,000, according to the Supreme Court’s press director, Hilario Mitogo.
The disgraced ex-official was tried alongside five other senior government figures accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funds.
Engonga had earlier made headlines in November when videos of his alleged affairs with multiple women, including wives of other officials, went viral on social media. The scandal coincided with ongoing investigations into the embezzlement charges.
