The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has commended Governor Peter Mbah following the donation of 400 modern desktop computers by the Enugu State Government to strengthen experiential and digital learning, research and technology-driven education in the institution.

 

The computers, delivered on Wednesday, form part of the state government’s commitment to advancing experiential learning and equipping tertiary institutions with modern technological infrastructure capable of producing globally competitive graduates.

 

Receiving the computers on behalf of the university management, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, described the intervention as another demonstration of Governor Mbah’s unwavering commitment to repositioning ESUT as a leading institution of innovation, digital education and academic excellence.

 

Prof. Okolie disclosed that 200 of the computers would be deployed to the ESUT College of Medicine, while the remaining units would be installed at the University’s 500-capacity ICT Centre located at the Main Campus, Ebeano City, Enugu.

 

According to him, the fully equipped ICT Centre would be activated ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session and would serve both academic and public purposes, including hosting computer-based examinations such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Examinations Council (NECO), the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), as well as other digital assessment platforms.

 

“We sincerely thank His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, for this generous intervention, which will significantly enhance scholarship, research and digital learning in ESUT. Our students will maximally utilise these facilities as we fully implement experiential learning across the university,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

 

He revealed that ESUT had already commenced far-reaching curriculum reforms in preparation for the 2026/2027 academic session, with a directive to the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Chike Anibeze, to constitute committees to review the 30 per cent practical component of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

 

The review, he explained, would integrate emerging disciplines and digital competencies, including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Data Science and other newly approved programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC), ensuring that graduates acquire practical skills that make them globally competitive and industry-ready.

 

The Vice Chancellor further stated that ESUT would play a strategic role in supporting the Enugu State Government’s Smart Green Schools initiative by producing technologically competent teachers capable of driving the state’s education reforms.

 

He expressed confidence that the university would become a national model for technology-driven education and innovative learning capable of providing solutions to contemporary societal challenges.

 

Also speaking, the Provost of the ESUT College of Medicine, Prof. Uchenna Ekwochi, described the donation as “a game changer” that would significantly improve teaching, learning and research, particularly through the College’s electronic library.

 

He disclosed that the College had specifically requested the computers and assured that they would be judiciously utilised and professionally maintained.

 

“Our excitement is overwhelming because this intervention came at the right time. The computers will be deployed to our e-library, where students will maximise their use, especially with the internet infrastructure already in place. Some units will also support administrative offices that require modern digital facilities,” he said.

 

Prof. Ekwochi expressed profound appreciation to Governor Mbah for his consistent support to the College of Medicine, assuring that the equipment would be effectively protected, maintained and deployed for the benefit of students and staff.

 

The donated computers were manufactured in Enugu by the Haier Computer Assembly Factory, established under the state government’s industrialisation drive and inaugurated by Governor Mbah a few months ago.

 

The facility, one of the flagship technology investments of the administration, is producing locally assembled computers and other digital devices to support educational institutions, government agencies and private organisations, while also promoting local manufacturing, creating jobs and advancing Enugu’s vision of becoming Nigeria’s leading technology and innovation hub.
