The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to unlock its tourism potential and harness the economic benefits of the sector, as part of its broader development agenda.
Governor Peter Mbah has identified tourism as a key driver in his vision of building a $30 billion economy for the state. In line with this goal, the 2026 budget earmarked ₦22.5 billion for the development of tourism infrastructure and sites.
The state is actively seeking both local and international investors, while also creating a conducive environment to stimulate growth in the sector. Governor Mbah has taken a leading role in promoting Enugu’s tourism opportunities to potential investors.
During a recent visit to the United Kingdom as part of President Bola Tinubu’s delegation, the governor showcased the state’s tourism potential to foreign stakeholders.
He also spoke at the UK-Nigeria Project Agglomeration Compact 2026 held at the House of Lords, where he highlighted investment opportunities across multiple sectors, particularly tourism. According to him, Enugu’s natural landscape—featuring hills, waterfalls, caves, and fertile scenery—positions it as a prime destination for leisure and business travel.
The Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Chris-Roberts Ozongwu, disclosed that ₦5 billion has been allocated for the upgrade of several lakes, including Opi, Nike, and others across the state.
He added that ₦5 billion would be used to complete the International Conference Centre (ICC) Hotel, while ₦4 billion is set aside for the rehabilitation of major waterfalls such as Awhum and others located in different parts of the state.
Further allocations include ₦3 billion for the development of water and amusement parks, ₦3 billion for the upgrade of the Enugu State Museum, and ₦2.5 billion for the completion of tourist and film parks.
The state has also begun revitalising previously neglected recreational facilities. Notably, Ngwo Park in Uwani has been restored and reopened for public use.
Additionally, the historic Presidential Hotel Enugu has undergone major upgrades and is being repositioned as a five-star facility, while the ICC Hotel is over 80 percent complete.
With these initiatives, Enugu aims to establish itself as a leading tourism hub in Nigeria, targeting over two million visitors annually through improved attractions, hospitality services, and cultural events.
