Enugu State First Lady’s Familiarization Visit: A Commitment to Responsive Governance and Community Developmen

A remarkable gathering of prominent dignitaries, stakeholders, youth and women groups, and the vibrant communities of Enugu West Senatorial District marked the familiarization visit of Her Excellency Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the First Lady of Enugu State, at the Awgu Local Council headquarters on Friday 14th June 2025. This event was not merely a formality; it was a heartfelt engagement aimed at nurturing goodwill and strengthening the bond between the government and its constituents.

The familiarization visit was designed to foster a deeper understanding of the needs and aspirations of the people across the five local government areas of Enugu West: Aninri, Awgu, Oji River, Eziagu and Udi. Through direct engagement with community leaders and residents, the First Lady underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to responsive governance and community development.

The day commenced with an opening prayer led by Hon. Ego Ajah, a commissioner in the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), setting a tone of unity and purpose for the proceedings.

The event witnessed the presence of key figures, including Senator Osita Ngwu, who represents the Enugu West Senatorial District in National Assembly, and Dr. Sir Martin Chukwunweike, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Barr. Victor Udeh, Chief of Staff to the Enugu State Government, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, Executive Chairman of Awgu LGA, along with other local government chairmen, members of the Enugu West House of Assembly, wives of local government chairmen, PDP chairmen, Hon. Commissioners, traditional rulers from the region among others.

Speaking on behalf of the five LGA Chairmen of Enugu West, In a heartfelt welcome address, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, Executive Chairman of Awgu LGA, expressed profound gratitude to both the Governor and the First Lady for their transformative leadership in the state. He emphasized the privilege of serving the people under the progressive government of His Excellency Gov. Peter Mbah, assuring them of their unwavering commitment as the Governor prepares for re-election in 2027. “We are grateful for the opportunity to serve under your visionary leadership,” Okolo stated, echoing the sentiments of his fellow local government chairmen.

Mrs. Joy Ogechukwu Ndu, wife of the Ezeagu LGA Chairman, alongside the four chairpersons of the Enugu West senatorial zone, extended a warm welcome to the First Lady, reinforcing their strong support for the administration of Gov. Mbah and his wife.

In their separate Speeches, on behalf of the women of the five LGA, respectively, The Assistant Financial Secretary, PDP Enugu state, Chief Barr. Ukamaka Alita, The PDP zonal woman leader Enugu West; Hon. Mrs. Zara Obodoeze, the commissioner for Gender, Children and Social Development; Hon.Ngozi Enih, Hon. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Enugu; Barr. Ugochi Mmadueke, Deputy leader of Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Mrs.Jane Eneh, all voiced their collective commitment to supporting the leadership of Gov. Peter Mbah. Their passionate speeches highlighted the vital role women play in community development and governance.

Speaking on behalf of the Enugu parastatals from Enugu West senatorial district, Hon. Uche Anya, chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, also echoed the sentiments of unwavering support for the current administration, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that defined the event.

Dr. Sir Martin Chukwunweike, the PDP State party Chairman, reiterated the party’s strong backing for the re-election bid of Gov. Peter N. Mbah in 2027, emphasizing the Governor’s dedication to the welfare of the people of Enugu State.

A significant high point of the event was a presentation of various gift items from different women groups in the district to the first lady, particularly a presentation of a life cow from each of the five local government Chairmen, as well as the state party Chairman.

Overwhelmed by the unprecedented reception from the Good people of Enugu West Zone , First Lady Mrs. Mbah expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the people. She praised the remarkable unity and collaborative efforts of stakeholders that have fostered peace and development in the zone. “My role as First Lady is one of service,” she affirmed, highlighting her commitment to championing causes that impact families, women, children, and communities.

In an interview with the media, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo emphasized the significance of the First Lady’s Familiarization Tour, describing it as a testament to the genuine affection that both the Governor and the First Lady have for the people of Enugu State.

The day culminated in a vibrant display of cultural heritage, with attendees treated to musical performances and traditional dances that celebrated the rich culture of the Enugu West Senatorial District.

As the event drew to a close, the overwhelming sentiment of solidarity and commitment to the innovative principles of Gov. Peter N. Mbah resonated throughout the gathering, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing journey toward community development and responsive governance in Enugu State.
