ENUGU REP DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER, okechuwku INTERVENES IN ’DEATH TRAP’, RECONSTRUCTS OLD ENUGU-ANAMBRA ROAD

It is safe to say that Hon. Toby Okechukwu is a man after the heart of his people as he has once again shown that he thinks about them always.

On the 18th of March, the Deputy minority leader made a round of inspection on the ongoing construction which he attracted to the Old Enugu-Anambra road which had become a death trap as it has caused a lot of accidents and made many lose their lives.

The road which was once dilapitated and gave motorists issue is currently under reconstruction as the lawmaker took rounds visiting each end of the site while also speaking with the workers on site, including the project supervisor, Mr Sama who are from Arab construction to ensure the work was going as smoothly as he had envisioned.

Speaking with UGAMATV during the inspection, the lawmaker who is also a member representing Awgu, Aninri and Oji-River Federal Constituency explained the construction on the site, stating that “the Arab contractors started from Ugwuoba to Opi, but they are currently doing the Ugwuoba section, because that is a major bypass from the express way, because the express way is not in good condition, and the Udi junction, and then they can go back to Agbor and Opi to make it motorable. But we considered Ugwuoba and Ojo section first because of traffic and it’s my constituency.

Addressing why the road took time before it was worked on, he added that “It’s been on and there’s been intervention by the state government. When I was chairman house committee on works the Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who is also aware of the work ongoing presently asked me to include it so that it gets done.

“There has been a lot of accidents in the area, and when the chairman of the council told me about his experience regarding the challenges we have here I said I have to come and bring Arab contractors to do it, but now it is sustainable because we were able to include it”, he said.

Speaking with the project Supervisor, Mr Sama, he said that “The road is about 20km and is reaching from ninth mile roundabout to udi junction. We are trying to make the road safe and not to be as dangerous as it was before. We are also trying to maintain the bridges along the road. We started from the other side of Agbor to Udi junction.

Explaining the challenges they have been facing since the construction of the road, he said “we cannot stop people from passing through the road even as we work on it, but our responsibility is to keep them safe and show them the right was to pass, and the road safety are cooperating with us to make it us to make it easier.

‘We are trying to work harder before the rain comes with full force, because the rain makes it difficult sometimes and it spoils some of our work and makes it even dangerous for the travelers, and so we are trying to make it fast so that it will be safe from the rain”, he concluded.
