Enugu Government Demolishes Defective Smart School Structure in Isi-Uzo Contract terminated as Governor Mbah enforces zero-tolerance stance on substandard projects

The Enugu State Government has demolished an ongoing Smart Green School project in Mbu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, following the discovery of significant structural defects and poor construction standards.

The decision came after a structural integrity test conducted by the state’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on July 16 revealed major cracks and flaws in the building, prompting Governor Peter Mbah to issue a directive for its immediate demolition and the termination of the contract.

Speaking during the continuation of the demolition exercise over the weekend, the Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, stated that the project had earlier been flagged by a monitoring team led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia. The team, composed of engineers and project managers, had identified and communicated concerns over substandard work to the contractor weeks prior.

“The contractors misrepresented their level of compliance and betrayed the trust of the state,” Obeagu said. “The governor’s response was swift—he ordered the structure pulled down and the contract revoked, in line with this administration’s zero-tolerance policy on poor project delivery.”

He noted that the Isi-Uzo Local Government Council, in collaboration with engineers from the Ministry of Works, has since taken control of the site to conduct further tests and reinforce other structures to prevent future issues.

The demolished school was part of the administration’s ambitious plan to build 260 Smart Green Schools—one in each of the state’s 260 wards—alongside 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres. Together, these form part of over 1,500 projects currently underway across Enugu State.

Obeagu emphasized that the governor’s action sends a clear message: “It is no longer business as usual. This move demonstrates the administration’s deep commitment to transparency, accountability, and high-quality infrastructure delivery for the people of Enugu State.”

Governor Mbah has consistently reiterated that the Smart Green Schools are a cornerstone of his education reform agenda, aimed at equipping future generations with modern learning environments and digital competencies.
