“Enugu ADC Hails Prof. Barth Nnaji’s Defection, Applauds Stand Against Federal Government Overtures”

The Enugu State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially welcomed former Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji, into its ranks following his online registration as a member of the opposition party.

In a press release issued on Saturday by the Enugu ADC Media Team, the party described Nnaji’s decision to join the ADC as a courageous and patriotic step, praising him for rejecting overtures allegedly made by the Federal Government and South-East governors.

According to the statement, the offers were aimed at persuading the renowned energy expert to deploy his Aba-based Geometric Power Plant to supply electricity across the South-East region—an initiative the party claimed would have been used as a “face-saving measure” for the perceived shortcomings of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the power sector.

The party noted that Nnaji’s refusal to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the electricity project demonstrated his commitment to the broader national interest and the struggle to rescue Nigeria from what it described as the failures of the current administration.

The statement also recalled President Tinubu’s campaign promise during the 2023 presidential election, where he pledged to deliver stable electricity and end the controversial estimated billing system, urging voters not to re-elect him if he failed to achieve those goals.

“Almost three years into his government, Nigeria is still facing persistent electricity challenges,” the statement said, noting that the national grid has continued to experience frequent collapses, with at least 12 incidents recorded in 2025 and several others reported in January 2026.

The party further lamented that households and businesses across the country—including states such as Kano, Enugu, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Lagos and Ogun—continue to grapple with erratic power supply and, in some areas, total blackout.

It added that the worsening electricity situation has forced many Nigerians to rely on generators and solar energy, while those unable to afford alternative power sources face severe hardship.

Enugu ADC also stated that it was aware of attempts by the Federal Government and South-East governors to leverage Nnaji’s Geometric Power Plant in Aba to supply electricity to the five states of the region, a move the party claimed was intended to create the impression that the federal administration had succeeded in revitalizing the power sector.

While commending Nnaji for declining the proposal, the party assured him that he had taken the right step by aligning with the ADC and the broader opposition movement seeking political change in the country.

The party also acknowledged the former minister’s contributions as a major supporter of the ADC in Enugu State, revealing that he had made financial donations to help the party surpass its registration targets in the ongoing membership drive.

According to the party, Enugu State currently ranks third in the South-East in the ongoing ADC online registration exercise, trailing Anambra and Imo States while staying ahead of Abia and Ebonyi.

The Enugu ADC expressed optimism that the entry of prominent figures like Professor Nnaji would inspire more Nigerians to join the party and strengthen the movement in the state and across the region.

The statement was signed by Hon. Ani Chukwuma on behalf of the Enugu ADC Media Team.
