EERC Raises Alarm Over Illegal Account Creation by MainPower, Orders Immediate Halt

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has issued a stern warning to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited following widespread complaints over the illegal creation of new customer accounts without installing the mandatory electricity meters.

In a statement released by the Commission, the EERC confirmed receiving multiple reports from customers alleging that MainPower had opened new accounts under the names of existing consumers without providing dedicated meters. This practice, according to the Commission, forces customers into paying additional estimated bills, a clear breach of established regulatory provisions.

Citing Section 35(1)(f) of the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023 and relevant clauses in the Customer Service Standard and Protection Regulations (CSSPR) 2024, the EERC reaffirmed that every new connection must include a properly installed meter and accessories as prescribed in the Metering Code.

“The process of connection shall comprise the connection of residences or premises to public supply and the installation of a meter and associated accessories,” the regulation states, stressing that all required meters and connection materials are strictly the responsibility of the service provider.

The Commission has officially notified MainPower to immediately stop creating new accounts for existing customers without proper metering, describing the action as a direct violation of the law.

The EERC further urged affected customers to report any such illegal practice via email at info@eerc.en.gov.ng or by calling 09122642755 for swift enforcement intervention.

Additionally, the Commission encouraged unmetered customers and new subscribers to take advantage of the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Scheme, which allows customers to pay for their meters upfront with guaranteed refunds under Commission-approved guidelines.

“Any new account created without a corresponding meter is in violation of regulatory provisions,” the statement concluded.
