Dutch football legend, Van Bommel agrees deal to become Belgium head coach

Dutch football legend, Mark van Bommel has reached an agreement to become the new head coach of Belgium.

The 48-year-old will succeed Rudi Garcia, who is expected to leave the role following Belgium’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While contracts are yet to be signed, all parties have reached a full agreement, with the official announcement expected once the final paperwork is completed.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development, stating: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go!

“Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”

Van Bommel takes on his first international managerial role after successful spells at club level.

The former Netherlands captain has previously managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, where he guided the Belgian club to a historic league and cup double during the 2022–23 season.

Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in the quarter-finals after defeat to Spain.
