Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has accused the Department of State Service of practically stripping lawyers naked while searching for incriminating materials during their visit to their client.
The secret service has however denied the allegation.
Ugamatv reported that Ejiofor last week also said the service forced the lawyer that visited Kanu to put on slippers.
Ejiofor on Tuesday recounted that the hostile treatment meted to them by the DSS during court-ordered visits had become “exceedingly intolerable.”
He stated this in a statement titled, ‘Update on yesterday’s visit to our client – Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.’
He said, “It is pertinent to note that the harassment, intimidation, and manhandling of our lawyers by the DSS officials during the visit still continued, despite our protest last week.
“Lawyers were practically stripped naked while searching for incriminating materials during a court-ordered visit.
“We therefore, do not mince words in stating that it is no longer safe as it stands today for us who are visiting our client.”

Ejiofor also alleged that visits to Kanu were conducted under an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, adding that they were denied writing materials during the visits.
“We are now more apprehensive of the fact that no trial will commence in the circumstance we presently find ourselves until our client – Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is transferred to a correctional centre.”
He added, “The script currently being played is a clear demonstration of the Federal Government strategy to deny him fair trial, and we cannot accept it.”
But while reacting to the allegation in an interview with The Newsmen , the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said there was no truth in it.
“(This is) not true, please,” Afunanya said.
