Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin Mourns Buhari, Hails His Legacy of Discipline and Patriotism

Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a “resolute statesman” whose life was marked by discipline, national service, and unshakable patriotism.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Barau joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the elder statesman, who died earlier in the day in a London clinic at the age of 82.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. I mourn the passing of the former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Barau said.

“He was not just a towering figure in our nation’s history, but a man whose life embodied discipline, resilience, and patriotism.”

Barau praised Buhari’s enduring legacy as one of Nigeria’s most influential leaders, recalling his service both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected President who completed two terms from 2015 to 2023.

“President Buhari was an untiring promoter of peace and unity. He was deeply committed to Nigeria’s security, stability, and development. Whether in uniform or in democratic robes, he served with honour and a clear vision for a better Nigeria,” the statement added.

Highlighting the late president’s decades-long dedication to public service, Senator Barau noted Buhari’s pivotal leadership during some of Nigeria’s most turbulent periods. He also commended Buhari’s anti-corruption stance, civil service reforms, and strong push for agricultural development and national self-reliance.

“History will remember him for his efforts to reshape our nation’s trajectory. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will endure in the hearts of Nigerians,” he said.

The Deputy Senate President concluded by offering prayers for the repose of Buhari’s soul and comfort for his grieving family:

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Her Excellency Aisha Buhari, his children, and all members of the family. May Allah give them the strength to bear this great loss. Amin.”
