Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said that Nigeria’s democratic institutions have become stronger over the last 27 years despite facing economic, security and political challenges.
Speaking at the 27th Democracy Day Inter-Denominational Church Service in Abuja, Kalu noted that the country’s democratic journey has been marked by both successes and difficulties, but democracy has continued to endure due to the resilience of Nigerians.
According to him, Nigeria remains one of Africa’s most influential democracies, with improving electoral processes and increasing citizen participation in governance. He stressed, however, that the true measure of democracy lies in its ability to improve the lives of citizens, expand opportunities, safeguard freedoms and strengthen national unity.
The Deputy Speaker also commended President Bola Tinubu for pursuing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the administration’s efforts to stabilise the economy, boost infrastructure development, attract investment and strengthen public finances as critical steps toward national growth.
Kalu expressed optimism that ongoing reforms in areas such as education, food security, local government autonomy and the oil and gas sector would deliver long-term benefits for Nigerians. He prayed for wisdom, strength and good health for President Tinubu as he continues to steer the affairs of the nation.
Reaffirming the commitment of the National Assembly to democratic governance, Kalu said lawmakers remain focused on enacting legislation that promotes economic growth, social justice, security, innovation and national development. He also pledged continued collaboration with all levels of government to achieve inclusive prosperity and social stability.
Calling on Nigerians to embrace hope and national unity, the Deputy Speaker urged citizens to reject cynicism and remain committed to peace, tolerance and nation-building. He further called for prayers for the President, public office holders, security agencies, youths, women and all Nigerians as the country celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
