The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has extended warm felicitations to the people of Awgu and Nigerians at large on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens, particularly the youth, to safeguard and uphold the values of democracy.

In a heartfelt Democracy Day message conveyed through his Special Adviser on General Media and Publicity, Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu, the Awgu Council Boss paid glowing tribute to the heroes of democracy whose sacrifices secured the nation’s democratic freedoms and empowered citizens with the right to choose their leaders.

Hon. Okolo noted that the sacrifices made by democratic icons must never be forgotten, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to cherish and protect the nation’s democratic heritage.

“The sacrifices of our democratic heroes must not be allowed to slip from our hands. Democracy remains one of the greatest gifts to our nation, and every citizen, especially our youths, must hold on to it seriously and responsibly,” he stated.

The Awgu Chairman also commended the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for what he described as exemplary leadership and exceptional service to the people over the past three years.

According to him, Governor Mbah’s administration has emerged as a beacon of hope, progress, and transformation, delivering tangible dividends of democracy across the state.

“Governor Peter Mbah has lived up to the expectations of Ndi Enugu, giving democracy a true meaning in our state and embodying the principles of democracy in action. His achievements across various sectors stand as clear evidence of the dividends of democracy and are transforming Enugu into the state of our dreams—one that is rapidly becoming a destination of choice for investors,” Hon. Okolo remarked.

He highlighted the significant strides recorded by the Mbah administration in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure development, economic growth, social welfare, security, and tourism, describing them as milestones that continue to improve the quality of life of residents.

Hon. Okolo further praised the governor for creating an enabling environment that allows local government councils to effectively discharge their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to grassroots development.

He disclosed that the Awgu Local Government Administration has continued to complement the state government’s efforts through several impactful projects, including the successful installation of over 20 solar-powered boreholes under the “Awgu Water for All” initiative, designed to provide clean and accessible water to communities across the council area.

The council chairman also cited the construction and opening of access roads leading to Smart Green Schools in Awgu, a move aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing quality education for students.

As Awgu joined the rest of the nation to commemorate Democracy Day, Hon. Okolo called on citizens to reflect on the significance of their democratic rights and remain committed to the collective task of strengthening democratic institutions.

“Democracy Day reminds us of our responsibility as elected representatives and reinforces our commitment to continually deliver the dividends of democracy to our people. Together, we must sustain the democratic ideals that promote development, accountability, and good governance,” he said.

The Awgu Local Government Chairman concluded by expressing optimism that the spirit of Democracy Day would inspire greater unity, civic participation, and collective efforts toward building a brighter and more prosperous future for all citizens.

The Democracy Day celebration in Awgu, he noted, serves not only as a tribute to the nation’s democratic journey but also as a renewed call to action in pursuit of sustainable development and inclusive governance.
