Residents of Marte Local Government Area in Borno State have been forced to abandon their homes following an attack by suspected Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a military base in their community on May 12. Reports indicate that four soldiers lost their lives in the attack, and many residents were captured by the militants.
Eyewitness accounts describe the assault as a coordinated effort by a large number of assailants who engaged government troops in a fierce battle for control of New Marte, situated in the volatile Lake Chad Basin region. Following the confrontation, which resulted in significant casualties, the terrorists have reportedly taken control of the town.
As a result of the invasion, thousands of residents have fled to Dikwa, a neighboring local government area approximately 27 kilometers away. A local source recounted, “We slept in the bush, and many residents are still trapped as we speak. The terrorists have taken over the military base and seized arms and ammunition.”
Another resident expressed deep concern over the situation, stating, “The terrorists have re-captured New Marte, and we are seriously in trouble.”
