Nigerian music star, Davido, has revealed plans to buy back his music masters from his international record label, Sony Music, before retiring from the music industry.
Speaking on an episode of The Long Form Podcast, the singer stressed the importance of ownership in the music business, describing it as a key factor in long-term financial and creative control.
Davido explained that regaining ownership of his masters would allow him to secure lasting value from his music catalogue and pass royalty earnings on to his children.
“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership. I plan to get my masters back from Sony soon. With that I can give each of my kids songs they will keep earning royalties from even after I retire,” he said.
He further noted that artistes must take the business side of music seriously, beyond fame and performance, to ensure long-term sustainability and generational wealth.
The singer’s remarks add to ongoing global conversations around music rights and artists’ ownership of their creative works.
