In a significant step towards transforming the agricultural landscape of Enugu State, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, has made a bold move to support the Enugu Farm Estates Initiative. This initiative, championed by Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, aims to revolutionize agriculture across all 260 wards of the state, turning rural communities into thriving economic hubs.
To facilitate the smooth execution of this ambitious project in Awgu, Chairman Okolo has initiated the construction of perimeter fencing and access roads leading to the Awgu Farm Estates. Additionally, security houses are being established, starting with the Ogbaku and Ituku Farm projects. These developments are crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of agricultural activities in the region.
The Enugu Farm Estates Initiative is not merely an agricultural program; it represents a comprehensive strategy for economic transformation in Enugu State. By revitalizing agriculture, the initiative seeks to boost agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and create employment opportunities. It aims to modernize farming practices, empowering local farmers and improving their livelihoods, thereby contributing to the overall development of the state.
The projected outcomes of the Enugu Farm Estates Programme are profound. With agriculture poised to contribute over 40% to the state’s GDP, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce rural-urban migration by fostering vibrant rural economies. Furthermore, it aims to lower poverty rates through job creation and financial inclusion, while also moving towards food self-sufficiency and reducing dependency on food imports. Governor Dr. Mbah envisions an ambitious goal of achieving a GDP of $30 billion for Enugu, with agriculture playing a pivotal role in this journey.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with UGAMATV, Comrade Charles Okeke, a native of Ogbaku and the project overseer, provided insights into the project’s rapid progress, while also highlighting the challenges faced by the workforce.
Also speaking, Rt. Hon. Okeafor Ejike, the councillor representing Ogbaku ward, praised the visionary leadership of Governor Mbah as he commended Chairman Okolo for his instrumental role in advancing the Farm Estate project. His acknowledgment reflects a collective commitment to the betterment of the community and the state at large.
Through the engagement of over 200 hectares of land for agro-business, the collaboration between the Awgu local government and its citizens heralds a hopeful future for Enugu State. This initiative promises to provide sustainable solutions to food insecurity, ensuring a stable and reliable food supply for the region.
As this ambitious strategy unfolds, Enugu aims to achieve a remarkable increase in agricultural output, projected at 2,000% within the next decade, positioning the state as a model for sustainable agricultural development. The community of Awgu, along with the entire Enugu State, stands on the brink of a transformative journey towards economic growth and agricultural prosperity.
