A Promise Kept, A Crisis Addressed
When Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo took the oath of office as Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area on September 30, 2024, one of his boldest campaign promises stood clear: to end the perennial water crisis that had plagued Ndi Awgu for generations. By October 2, the very day he officially assumed duty, he moved swiftly from rhetoric to action—setting up technical teams of geologists and engineers to bring his “Awgu Water for All Initiatives” to life, with the mission of getting water into every household in Awgu.
Armed with a Master’s degree in Geology and a deep understanding of the terrain, Hon. Okolo brought professional expertise and political will together. In less than one year, he has dug 20 solar-powered boreholes across Awgu communities, with 13 fully completed, fitted with overhead tanks, piping systems, and solar plants ready for commissioning.
This achievement is nothing short of historic. It positions Hon. Okolo as not just a promise-maker but a promise-keeper—a talk-and-do Chairman whose leadership has restored confidence in local government governance.
Water in Every Community, Water in Every Household
From Agbogugu to Ihe, Owelle Court to Ogbaku, Obeagu to Awgunta, and many other communities across Awgu, residents are beginning to experience what once seemed impossible: sustainable access to safe and clean water at the household level. For many families, the struggle of trekking long distances for water is giving way to a new reality of convenience, health, and dignity.
But Hon. Okolo did not stop there. Recognizing the link between water, sanitation, and public health, his administration also rolled out a massive end-to-open-defecation campaign, distributing 2,000 modern Sato toilets and training artisans in toilet installation to ensure sustainability.
Lighting Up Lives, Powering Communities
The Awgu Water for All Initiatives are further complemented by investments in rural electrification. Hon. Okolo facilitated the installation and donation of transformers to communities in need, ending years of darkness for several villages. In addition, over 20 solar streetlights were installed across 25 communities, enhancing security, visibility, and quality of life.
A Legacy in the Making
In just one year, Awgu has moved closer to solving one of its most pressing challenges. The Awgu Water for All Initiatives are more than just about boreholes—they are about dignity, public health, equitable access, and lifting every household into a better quality of life.
As Ndi Awgu prepare to mark this milestone, one truth rings louder than ever: Hon. Uche Okolo has proven that leadership is service, service is action, and action is impact.
Awgu is no longer thirsting for hope—it is drinking from it.
