The Nigerian Army has detained Private Christopher Emmanuel following allegations that he assaulted a female vendor named Doshima in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
The development was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by Capt. Abdullahi Osabo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Makurdi. According to the statement, the incident allegedly occurred on May 6 and was reported two days later. An investigation is currently underway at the Headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).
Preliminary findings suggest the altercation may have stemmed from a dispute over an unpaid debt. Reports indicate that the soldier claimed the vendor insulted him during a phone conversation, which may have escalated into a physical confrontation.
“Private Christopher Emmanuel is currently in custody, and a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Capt. Osabo stated.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s dedication to upholding human rights and enforcing discipline within its ranks.
“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for human rights violations and will implement appropriate disciplinary measures based on the outcome of the investigation. The Army leadership assures both the public and the victim that justice will be served,” he added.
OPWS also condemned the alleged assault and reiterated its firm stance against misconduct by military personnel. Capt. Osabo urged the public to report any cases of abuse through the Army’s Human Rights Desk helpline rather than on social media, assuring that all complaints are handled with urgency and seriousness.
