Anambra Seeks Investors to Harness Gas Reserves for Power Generation

The Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Julius Chukwuemeka, has reaffirmed the state government’s willingness to collaborate with investors interested in power generation projects.

Chukwuemeka made the statement while receiving the management teams of Orient Petroleum and PARAS Energy, who visited the ministry to explore a partnership aimed at utilising the state’s natural gas reserves to generate electricity.

The commissioner explained that the administration of Charles Chukwuma Soludo has transformed the state through major infrastructure development, turning Anambra from what he described as a “departure lounge” into a “destination hub.”

He further revealed that the state has already domesticated its electricity legislation and established the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ANSERC), creating a favourable environment for investors interested in generating electricity using the state’s gas resources.

According to him, these reforms demonstrate the government’s readiness to work with credible partners to expand power generation capacity and improve energy supply within the state.

Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Orient Petroleum, Sunny Okoye, commended the state government for its efforts in strengthening the power sector. He disclosed that Anambra possesses abundant gas reserves capable of supporting electricity generation.

Similarly, the Managing Director of PARAS Energy, Yashwant Kumar, noted that the company has over two decades of experience in delivering energy solutions. He expressed the firm’s readiness to partner with the state government and Orient Petroleum to ensure a steady supply of natural gas for power generation.

Kumar explained that the gas supply would power a proposed electricity plant to be developed by PARAS Energy, with the generated power expected to serve industrial clusters across the state.

Officials of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission, alongside senior management staff of the Ministry of Power and Water Resources, were also present at the meeting.
