The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, has commended the women of the state for their resilience, industrious spirit and significant contributions to the state’s social and economic growth as the world marks International Women’s Day.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Linus Obogo, Governor Otu described women in the state as vital pillars of development and stability, noting that their efforts continue to sustain the state’s prosperity and unity.
According to the governor, Cross River women have consistently demonstrated courage, creativity and determination in various sectors, including agriculture, commerce, education and public service.
“Our women represent strength, innovation and perseverance. From farms and markets to schools, industries and government institutions, they continue to play an important role in shaping the future of our state,” Otu said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing policies and programmes that will enhance women’s participation in critical sectors such as agriculture, entrepreneurship, education, technology and other emerging areas of the economy.
Otu emphasised that empowering women goes beyond social responsibility and should be seen as a vital economic strategy capable of driving broader development.
“When women succeed, families flourish, communities become stronger and the economy grows,” the governor stated.
He also pointed to recent recognition of the state’s progress in gender-focused development. According to him, the latest State of Women’s Economic Empowerment report by BudgIT ranked Cross River among the top states in Nigeria implementing policies that support women’s economic inclusion.
The governor said the recognition validates his administration’s efforts to create opportunities for women through strategic investments in agriculture, education, innovation and the creative industry.
He further noted that the state’s progress in agriculture and emerging industries reflects the government’s determination to place women at the centre of its development agenda.
“Our policies are deliberately designed to create opportunities for women, whether through access to land, participation in agricultural value chains, or involvement in technology, entrepreneurship and the creative economy,” Otu explained.
Governor Otu concluded by celebrating the achievements and determination of women across the state, including farmers, traders, professionals, artisans and community leaders, while assuring them of continued support from his administration.
“On this International Women’s Day, I celebrate every Cross River woman. Your dedication and strength inspire our progress as a state, and this government will continue to promote policies that recognise your value, amplify your voice and expand opportunities for your advancement,” he said.
