The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that its officers invaded the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) and assaulted medical staff during an operation.
In a statement issued on May 12, 2026, and signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the police described the reports as false and misleading.
The Command clarified that the operation in question was conducted solely by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as part of a lawful assignment within the hospital premises.
According to the statement, the Chief Medical Director of UUTH raised an alarm to the Commissioner of Police after unidentified armed men were seen in the hospital, prompting immediate concern over security.
Following the distress call, the hospital management reportedly shut its gates as a precautionary measure, while the Commissioner of Police deployed officers to the scene to assess the situation and maintain order.
The Command explained that upon arrival, it was discovered that the armed operatives were EFCC personnel carrying out official duties.
It added that the Chief Medical Director was duly informed and advised to reopen the gates to allow the operatives exit peacefully.
However, the Command alleged that the advice was not followed, which heightened tension within the hospital environment.
“The EFCC operatives, who were allegedly held within the premises and pelted with stones, eventually forced open the gate in order to exit the hospital premises,” the statement said.
The Police Command firmly stated that its officers did not take part in any invasion, assault, teargas use, or brutality against hospital staff, as claimed in some online reports.
It urged the public to disregard the false narrative, warning that such misinformation could cause unnecessary panic and misrepresentation of the facts surrounding the incident.
