AGNES Hails Jimoh Ibrahim’s Election as UN Committee Chair, Says It Reflects Nigeria’s Global Influence

The African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) has applauded the election of Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, as Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee, describing the development as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence in global diplomacy.

In a statement issued in Abuja, AGNES Director of Technical Services and Nigeria Country Director, Dr. David Awolala, said Ibrahim’s emergence to lead the committee responsible for the UN’s budgetary and administrative affairs demonstrates the international community’s confidence in Nigeria’s leadership and diplomatic capabilities.

According to Awolala, the appointment represents a major milestone for Nigeria and highlights the country’s increasing relevance in multilateral engagements and global decision-making processes.

He noted that Ibrahim’s election comes at a crucial time when international institutions are facing increasing demands to enhance efficiency, accountability and prudent resource management in addressing emerging global challenges.

Awolala emphasized that the Fifth Committee plays a strategic role within the United Nations, as it oversees the organisation’s budget and administrative operations, which are critical to advancing key global priorities such as sustainable development, climate action, humanitarian assistance and institutional reforms.

“Senator Ibrahim’s election is a testament to his intellectual capacity, diplomatic experience and commitment to promoting Nigeria’s interests on the global stage. We are confident that he will provide the leadership needed to strengthen transparency, accountability and effectiveness within the United Nations system,” he said.

AGNES also highlighted the growing importance of climate governance and sustainable development in international policy discussions, stressing the need for stronger African representation in efforts to address climate change, adaptation challenges, resilience building and development financing.

Awolala reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to collaborating with Ibrahim and Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in advancing Africa’s priorities in climate finance, loss and damage, capacity building, climate governance and sustainable development.

He added that AGNES remains dedicated to promoting evidence-based policies and technical solutions aimed at strengthening resilience and accelerating sustainable growth across the African continent.

The organisation expressed optimism that Ibrahim’s tenure would create new opportunities for Nigeria and Africa to influence critical global decisions, strengthen international partnerships and drive inclusive development outcomes.
