Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the Ministry of Energy to swiftly prepare an implementation plan for the recently enacted State Electricity Market Law and to work closely with the National Electricity Regulatory Commission for technical support.
The new law empowers the state to issue licences, set regulations and monitor electricity producers, mini-grid operators, distributors and other players in the power sector. It also paves the way for private firms to generate off-grid or mini-grid power, boosting investment and renewable-energy initiatives.
The directive, issued on Friday night during the State Executive Council meeting in Osogbo, follows the passage of the Osun Electricity Bill 2025 by the State House of Assembly in July. A statement from the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the development on Saturday.
Adeleke said key infrastructure projects, including the Ilesa dualisation, the Ile-Ife flyover, the Oke Fia/Lameco flyovers and the Iwo dualisation, remain on schedule.
He further set ambitious targets for the technology sector, commending the launch of the Imole Wi-Fi Initiative and directing the Ministry of Science and Innovation to accelerate the state’s ICT and tech-innovation policies. He also asked for a roadmap on the application of Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technology.
On agriculture, the governor instructed the immediate rollout of the Statewide Youth Agropreneurship Project across all local governments.
Turning to local government affairs, Adeleke charged the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to address “the ugly development at Ipetumodu where the King was recently jailed in the United States of America.” He also mandated each council to draft a development blueprint aligned with the state’s overall agenda.
For youth engagement, the governor ordered a review of the Imole Youth Corps to ensure effective monitoring and delivery of its objectives.
In sports, he called for urgent action to fast-track bills establishing the Osun Sports Commission, the Police Trust Fund and the Osun Sports Development Fund.
Highlighting Osun’s growing reputation in climate-change advocacy, Adeleke urged council members to leverage the state’s achievements to attract grants and donor support.
With the next election cycle approaching, the governor emphasised evidence-based governance and directed the state statistics agency to generate accurate performance data in line with global best practices.
The council adopted Adeleke’s address as its official resolutions and set up a high-powered committee to tackle manpower shortages in the health and education sectors. It also approved the elevation of several minor chiefs to Part II status and confirmed Prince Adeleke Saheed Adeyemi as the Olokusa of Okusa in Egbedore Local Government.
