Adamawa State Government Outlaws Marker Day Celebrations Citing Rising Indiscipline and Moral Decay

The Adamawa State Government has banned the growing practice by graduating secondary school students called Marker Day.

The government attributes the ban to concerns for discipline and morality.

The state Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development effected the ban by issuing a directive prohibiting the organization, promotion, or participation in Marker Day celebrations.

The ban, directed at all public and private schools in the state, cited rising indiscipline and moral degradation among students.

In a circular signed by the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Umar Pella, the ministry expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of Marker Day celebrations, which it said contradicts values upheld in the education system.

Marker Day activities, the commissioner stated, are often associated with public displays of lawlessness, societal disrespect, and acts of moral decay, which should have no place within the educational environment.

“The decision to ban the celebrations was taken in response to the growing incidence of unruly behavior, erosion of cultural values, and security threats linked to the events,” the commissioner added.
