Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has offered automatic employment to Mrs. Akaniro Gethrude Chinyere, the wife of a visually impaired teacher at Ozuitem Secondary School in Bende Local Government Area, who had been voluntarily assisting her husband in teaching without pay.
Mrs. Chinyere’s selfless service gained public attention after a video of her aiding her husband in the classroom went viral on social media, sparking widespread admiration.
In response, Governor Otti directed his Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Kenechukwu Nwosu, to visit the school, assess its challenges, and verify the authenticity of the report. Following the visit, the governor approved her immediate employment.
During the official presentation of her appointment letter, Nwosu highlighted that the recent recruitment of 5,300 teachers across the state was aimed at improving the teacher-to-pupil ratio in public schools.
“This is not just about recognising dedication; it is also about ensuring our schools are well-staffed with capable hands,” Nwosu said.
Overjoyed by the gesture, Mrs. Chinyere and her husband expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Otti.
“We are overwhelmed by his kindness and for recognising our efforts,” they said, beaming with appreciation.
The development has been widely praised as a symbol of encouragement for unsung heroes in Nigeria’s education sector.
