A HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER KILLS WOMAN, 10 INJURED IN ANANMBRA

A hit-and-run driver has reportedly killed a woman at the Okpoko junction in Onitsha, Anambra State

The driver, whose identity could not be ascertained, allegedly knocked down the woman while she was crossing the road.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Wednesday around 8am.

One of the eyewitnesses told our correspondent, “The vehicle was on top speed and the driver fled after knocking down the woman.”    ,,

The Anambra State Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Pascal Anigbo, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said the victim was rushed to the Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, by her parents before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team from the Upper Iweka Unit Command.

“On arriving the at hospital, the doctors pronounced her dead. The corpse was deposited in the morgue in the same hospital,” Anigbo said.

Similarly, a crash occurred around 8.20am on Wednesday in Ihiala, near Onitsha.

The crash, it was gathered, involved a Toyota Hiace with number plate CAL15XJ and an Actros tanker with number plate FGG 176 YU.

Anigbo, who confirmed the incident, said 15 persons were involved in the crash.

He stated, “It occurred near the KM filling station, along the Ihiala-Onitsha Expressway. The time of crash was 8.20am. Ten victims, four males and six females sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“No death was recorded. The injured victims were rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, by FRSC rescue team from the Ihiala Unit Command. Obstructions have been cleared and normal traffic flow ensured.”

Anigbo said the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Andrew Kumapayi, while sympathising with the families of the victims had warned road users against crossing expressways.

He said the commander cautioned drivers to always drive with common sense and obey speed limits so that they could control their vehicles in the event of any emergency.
