Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany head coach following the country’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the sixth national team manager to leave after elimination from the tournament.
Germany’s campaign came to an end after a Round of 32 defeat to Paraguay, ending the team’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages beyond the opening round. The German Football Association (DFB) subsequently confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation following discussions with senior officials.
In a farewell message, the 38-year-old apologised to German supporters, saying he was disappointed that he could not deliver the World Cup success they had hoped for.
Nagelsmann had reportedly informed DFB officials of his intention to leave during a confidential meeting held after Germany’s elimination.
His departure follows those of Sebastián Beccacece (Ecuador), Ronald Koeman (Netherlands), Miroslav Koubek (Czechia), Steve Clarke (Scotland) and Hong Myung-bo (South Korea), who have also left their roles following their teams’ exits from the tournament.
Nagelsmann was appointed Germany coach in September 2023 and guided the team to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Spain. His tenure ended less than three years after taking charge of the national team.
