You will find them under trees gossiping and breaking egusi – NSUBEB Chairman laments how Nasarawa teachers turned schools into gossip centers

The Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Dr. Kassim Muhammad Kassim, says primary school teachers across the state have abandoned classrooms and turned the school environment into gossip centers, as they hardly go to class to teach the pupils.

Dr. Kassim lamented that each time you visit any of the primary schools during teaching hours, you find teachers under the trees gossiping while the female teachers break egusi.

He urged the teachers to take the teaching profession seriously and not compromise or destroy the profession.

Dr. Kassim urged the NUT officials to appreciate Governor Abdullahi Sule for putting an end to percentage payment, which the teachers faced prior to his coming into office in 2019.

“We have one of the best governors in Nasarawa State; we all remember when teachers were paid in percentages, promotions were not implemented, but Governor Abdullahi Sule has put all these to history,” he said.

“It’s not about building infrastructures in schools alone; it’s about giving quality teaching to our pupils. Today, you are here to elect a brand-new set of leaders; I urge you all to elect people who will not just represent you, negotiate for you, but also come back to tell you to do the right thing.

“Teachers in Nasarawa State have abandoned our classrooms and turned our school environment into breaking egusi and gossip; they don’t teach anymore. Such attitudes won’t help the upcoming generation; it’s a shame that most of our pupils can’t read and write.

“The worst is that a lot of teachers are involved in stealing school furniture provided by the government and selling it to private schools.”
